Please Help Us!

We need to know the sort of courses you would be most likely to find useful. Enclosed is a simple form for you to fill in and return after discussing this with your membership. Thank you for your assistance.

Sound and Lighting Workshop

Without waiting for your reply we have arranged a Sound and Lighting workshop for March 24th at The Club Theatre Altrincham. – this type of course has always gone down well in the past and as the booking form explains this course is designed to have a wide appeal. The course is aimed at persons who have little or no knowledge of sound and lighting but would like to learn. It will cover the basics of lighting a set and then cover the different types of stage light and use of special effects. Hands on demonstrations and practical work will be included.

First Aid Course.

Most of you probably have has at some time an accident backstage or someone taken ill during a show. How do you deal with this? Do you pay for St Johns Ambulance or the Red Cross to attend your shows, or do you rely on someone present having first aid experience. With today’s litigious society this could be an expensive matter.

The guild is considering arranging a full one or two day first aid course leading to a recognized certificate. The cost for this course would be around £25 per student as we would have to hire a qualified company / group to do the course. As long as enough people are interested the Guild Committee will investigate further Please indicate your interest on the course questionnaire.

Better Late Than Never

Enclosed with your newsletter (if you were a winner) is the photographs taken at the awards evening in June 2001. These appeared on the CTG web-site and were then mislaid (don’t ask!) – however, they now come to you with the compliments of Cheshire Theatre Guild.

One Act Play Festival

We now have an adjudicator and very soon a venue. All we now need is your support! Watch out for the dates and details very soon.

Bollington Festival Players on TV

Bollington Festival Players production of “Comfort and Joy” by Mike Harding had a very exciting night when BBC2 cameras descended upon them during the Friday night performance.

Amongst the audience was the MP for Macclesfield Nicholas Winterton who is a great supporter of Amateur Theatre in his constituency. Mr Winterton completed 30 years in parliament in October and BBC2 were producing a documentary on his three decades of service to Macclesfield. They had followed him around his constituency all day culminating in his visit to the Arts Centre where he was filmed enjoying a very funny play.

One of the Festival Players members, Doreen Young, was on the selection committee who appointed Mr Winterton as the Conservative candidate back in 1971. She was interviewed by the Political Correspondent for the North West, Jim Hancock, who was very interested in her first hand knowledge of the MP’s activities. The programme eventually went out on BBC2’s North Westminster at 1pm on Sunday 4th November.

Your Flexible Friend

No not the credit card that helped buy all those Christmas goodies, but adjudicator Garth Jones. Why flexible? Well because Garth is sometimes asked for adjudications at very short notice and because Garth doesn’t like to say no these are usually fitted into his busy schedule of visits. In certain festivals late entries would not even be considered – they would be immediately returned.

Cheshire Theatre Guild consider themselves to be a “friendly festival” and the more adjudications the better, but please give as much notice as you can. Please note that our overworked adjudicator will not be available from February 17th to 23rd and dates in the week before that are now all taken – this means there will be delays in getting adjudications to you during this busy period so please make allowances.

Amateur Stage

Recent articles about Cheshire Theatre Guild members productions.

In the December issue there was a one and a half page report on The Club Theatre’s World Premiere production of “The Devil at Midnight”.

In the January issue there was a one page report on Tudor Players production of “Quartet”. (Since publication it has been confirmed that Tudors will be taking the play to the Isle of Man Easter Festival).

Both the articles and many, many more about events in the North West are written by Irene Rostron. Our greatful thanks to Irene for putting our area very much on the map – a real labour of love because Itene tells me she receives no payment from Amateur Stage Magazine for her articles.

Free Publicity

Yes that’s right free national publicity (don’t switch off if you are not on the internet). Enclosed with this newsletter is a brochure about an internet site that carries free publicity about your group and your productions.

UKVillages.co.uk is the web address and once you have entered the site you can add information about your society and productions ant it will appear not just under the town or village you play in but on every town and village site within a 5 mile radius. If you don’t have access to the internet perhaps one of your members does, or you can go to your local library where they will be able to give you access to the internet and assistance if you so wish.

THE CHESHIRE THEATRE GUILD,

I am a Japanese filmmaker who is planning to shoot a film in Swindon and Wiltshire in the summer of 2002. I am wondering if anyone in your organisation might be interested in the project. This is a micro-budget, independent
Japanese-British collaborative film project, and we are looking for actors who are enthusiastic about the project, rather than for people with extensive film and theatrical acting experience.

Please have a look at our advertisement. If you should think that is suitable to be added to your notice board, mailing list or whatever form you use to make announcements to your members, we would be very grateful.
Further information and contact details are all in the document and on our web site at

Thank you very much and best wishes,

JAPANESE FILMMAKER SEEKS FOR BRITISH ACTORS: WILTSHIRE FILM

I am a Tokyo-based filmmaker planning to shoot a film in Wiltshire during the summer of 2002. This project is a micro-budget independent film. It is a 80-minute DV feature. The story is about a Japanese painter who revisits Wiltshire to see an ex-lover, only to find unexpected gaps in the way each of them sees the landscape, brought about by their differing memories and fantasies. The project is currently titled "Separate Landscape".  The project is currently titled "Separate Landscape". A proposal and the complete script have been accepted by the local council, and the council has agreed to help the project.

We are currently looking for actors to play main roles in this film. Experience acting in film is desirable but not completely necessary; skill and enthusiasm are more important. For actors I think that this will be an
opportunity to gain experience acting in a unique project and for all of us it will be an opportunity to work closely with people from a different culture.

Main actors sought:
Melanie:
Lead role, female, about 29 years old. Works at Monument Record Centre in Swindon. She is a rather quiet person, and has been living in Swindon or Wiltshire all her life. She speaks Wiltshire dialect which is a standard south England accent. We prefer the actress height to be a maximum of 5/8 (172 cm). Hair can be any color.

Charlie:
Lead role, male, about 30 years old. Smart and gentle guy. Working at an urban planning office. Born and raised in London or anywhere in South England.

Lucy:
Lead role, female, late 20's. Melanie's close friend. Used to work at Monument Record Centre. Lively and independent. Born and raised in London or anywhere in South England.

The basic schedule:

(Wiltshire)
(Rehearsal: 7 -10 days. shooting: 10-15 days---> depends on which role you
act)

How to apply:
If you do decide that you are interested, as a first step, could you please send one photograph (or more if you prefer), together with a brief CV and your contact address and email address (these written documents should be on one A4 sheet), to the address at the bottom of this email, by post? (Please "do not" send photos or CVs by email and fax, and please do not spend a great deal of money sending things by post; materials cannot be
